Most of my drive to work is 40 mph on a country road with houses on both sides. A lot of time I find it feels nice to get up to speed in second then go to fourth and just settle in at 40mph. Third gear is pretty useless there and I end up short shifting anyway. Let's face it, fourth gear is pretty low and the torque at 40 mph is more than enough to keep me cruising on level ground.
Occasionally if i`m really lazy. I leave it in 4 and slide the clutch out. But 1-4 and 2-4 most of the time. The only reason I can get away with it is the Vette is equiped with a 4.56 gear. I would never recommend this stunt with a 3 series gear.

I do 2-4s all the time with my 3.70s. She chugs along just fine.
Don't feel bad. I do it all the time, on every car I owned with a standard (and they ranged from 3.08 - 4.11 rears). I even do it in my wife's Toyota Solara. I'll play around winding out 1st and 2nd a little then settle down into 4th. 3rd is such a long reach LOL. I chalk it up to my lazyness, that's why my vette has an automatic. I even do it on my 68 firebird with a manual 3-speed tranny, going from 1st to 3rd. Joe
I remember the old Muncie with 336 rear, it went first only uphill starting out, other than that the old mild L48 with the DPFI on it went from 2-4 all the time.....just 2 gears, hell with it....
