Default Radiator auxilliary fans

What is the best way to mount auxillary cooling fans - pushing or pulling air thru the radiator? The guy I bought my BB from had the 2 electric fans pulling air (engine side of radiator) thru the radiator. I have the car apart and want to put it back together to cool the best. My logic is to push air through??

Pullers are more efficient than pushers.

I agree pullers are much better.

Use a puller fan.

http://www.idavette.net/hib/bbfh7.htm tells of one way to do it.

Can anyone explain why. To me it seems like pusher fans would be trying to impede (pushing against) air coming into the radiator?

Most (I believe) are referring to a puller mounted on the engine side of the radiator. If you mounted a pusher on the engine side (you are right) it would be impended as it would be pushing against the normal air flow.

A pusher fan on the front side (head light side) of the radiator would be just as efficient as a puller but their is a space issue with the hood in the open position their not enough room on the upper half of the radiator for a fan.

Good point. The flex-a-lite fans are reversable. I had the hood off while everything was coming out and didn't notice that there may be a clearance problem if the fans were mounted on the "outside" of the radiator (logical place to put them in my thinking).

The General likes "puller" fans. I have both the engine mounted factory "puller" one and the factory auxiliary electric "puller" fan on my '80 L-82.

I "think" pulling is more efficient from a fan performance issue. Probably has something to do with the open area behind the fan creating a low pressure area vs high static pressure from blowing directly at a radiator. I used to design HVAC equipment so I realy should know this. I bet it is something like that.
