I took my steering wheel off, along with the horn button, tele tightener "thingy" and the shroud that goes over the column, to repaint it all. I finally finished, polished all the parts so they looked nice and went to fit it all again today. I fitted the horn contact wire into the plastic socket/tube within the steering boss, twisted it so it would lock and immediately after I moved my hand, the 22 year old plastic decided to call it a day and broke! A small piece of spring loaded shrapnel came rocketing out and hit me between the eyes!!! Not wanting to buy a new steering boss for the sake of a piece of plastic, I decided to try and build a new tube.
If anyone else needs to do this, here's how
Take the lid of your missus' Quick Unpick (the gadget used to unpick stitching) as it's not far off being the right external diameter to fit inside the boss (after you chip out the remaining original plastic) and the inside diameter only needs a little bit of work to allow the horn contact spring and plastic locking piece to fit inside. All you have to do then is cut a little U shaped slot to give the cam on the plastic locking piece somewhere to lock. Do that and glue it inside the boss and you're good to go
I just thought I'd share that with you to validate the several hours I spent doing it!!!
Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. That part would have been $30 from a dealer!
How does an Aussie end up in Saudi?
Just wondering. I was over there a few years ago on a large grey ship and didn't fall in love with the neighbourhood.

Ahhh, yes..... It wouldn't have cost much I know, but the time it takes for anything to get here can really cause you to lose the will to live! Plus, needing to convince the missus that I'm not spending money on my Vette, I show her that I'm saving money by fixing or making something. That worked a treat last night, explaining what I was doing, just before mentioning that Ecklers have new dash pads...

I spent 15 years in the Royal Australian Air Force as an aircraft technician. I came out here 6 years ago to try and teach the locals in the Royal Saudi Air Force to do what I can do. I reckon I'll have a job here for ever if I want it!!!
It certainly aint Kansas Toto, but it pays the bills and as we get 9 weeks vacation time a year, with the company paying for flight tickets 3 times a year, it allows me to go almost anywhere in the world. Maybe 4 more years and I'm done
Ahhhhhh............ so easily it is quipped, from someone who is but a phone call away from a Corvette parts supplier and a day or two's wait for delivery.
