Default Mystery Screw - HELP!

I just finished an engine rebuild, and a few carb rebuilds and all went well except for THIS! I found THIS left on the work bench.

Where does it go? Holley? Rochester? Comp cams? Poulan? Weedwhacker? WHAT!?!

I am so "screwed"

That is for the widget valve on the flux capacitor. It is very important and I would not leave it out.

Never seen one like that

I am about to just fire it up and hope for the best. If it was a 3/8" coarse nut or a 1/4-20 screw I would just blow it off but this baby looks IMPORTANT! Dang!

Because of the angled head towards the threads and its apparent size, my guess would be one of the two screws that go inside the primaires of a Rochester Q-Jet that hold the top of the carb to the main body.

Nope, those Rochester screws are flat on top, but it does look like a carb screw. Choke assemblies, idle solenoids and pull-offs sometimes use tapered seat screws, but I don't recognize that one and I've done a TON of carbs over the last thirty years.

But Wrencher makes a very valid point as well. I haven't seen that oval shaped head on the carbs I've done either. Look at the air horn, choke pull off, and idle stop solenoid to see if there might be a screw missing.

I think I saw one of those once on the end of the crankshaft. Better tear it down and check...

Those are very similar to the ones that hold the top onto the main body, except the ones in the base are phillips head instead of flat blade screws. I often find them swapped by accident.

This screw is a larger diameter than those that hold the carb top on.

I went ahead and fired up the engine today. After a heater hose incident and the customary new fuel line blues it seems to be ready to tune at this time. The new exhaust sounds nice and quiet too.

I think the best way to find out what the screw goes to is to throw the screw in the trash. The answer will come to me as the garbage truck drives off. It usualy goes that way for me.

It looks like the screw for the idle selenoid bracket on the front of the carb. Should be phillips head though.

Greg or Greg,

Do you have only one screw holding the idle stop solenoid?

I have 2 screws holding the idle stop solenoid on to the side of the carb and they are both philips style and slightly smaller than this one. I was not sure if that solenoid was for the idle stop or maybe used for when you fire up the A/C unit. Either way the 2 screws that hold it on are still there.

You guys had my hopes up there for a minute. Keep the guesses coming.

Did you have any helpers? One time I helped a friend put together a motor, and left him a spare bolt or something I had laying around. It took him a while to figure out it wasn't necessary. LOL JOe

I only have the one screw that looks exactly like the one pictured. On my '72 454 it is a idle stop solenoid, has nothing to with AC. The bracket kind of twists over a mounting tab on the front of the carb and then secured with the 1 screw.
