Default transmission oil cooler

Summit sells a passive PermaCool 24" long with two 1/2" tubes. Do you think one like that would do the job for a tranny oil cooler?

Depends on its rating.

Over the years, the only ATF cooler I really liked at MOST effective, .....

was a condensing coil from a room a/c unit....it was large of course, and carried two 3/8 circuits in parallel, and of course cooled like crazy.....

AFAIK, all the rest suck by comparo.....

so once again, the best parts are more or less 'free'.....

Right now, the oil lines are plumbed into the radiator as any stock setup. The temp gauge on my new 200r4 swap has reached 200 degrees during relatively short drives. I think I should add on something.

Hi,
had the same problem when I fitted a 200-r4. I bought a small cooler & mounted it on the front of the rad (no A/C condenser fitted) & plumbed it into the line going from the trans to the rad. What's happened is that it's OVER cooling the fluid as the normal running temp is 120/130 when in OD with converter locked. Running in lower gears causes the temp to reach the (advised) optimum of 150. Additionally, and nobody seems to believe me on this, the coolant very rarely goes above the stat rating of 180 now, whereas it regularly used to reach well in excess of 200 (obviously as it no longer has steaming hot trans fluid in the rad with it).
If I was to do it again I'd fit a smaller cooler If you're interested I might be able to find the reciept for the model number of the one I got.

UKPaul, thanks. I'm trying to avoid an electric fan with the cooler, and want to use what is refered to as a Frame rail cooler, and mount it down low in front of the radiator. Later I want to mount an a/c condenser with HotRod Air, so I'll need the room.

Can you tell me the GVW rating of yours? That would help get me in the ballpark.

Do you mean that thing? I would not use one of those, the stacked plate coolers are much stronger and will not look ugly with all fins bent and all. I had a long cooler (B&M sells them as their coolers but theya re long brand, a very common brand also used in heavy machinery oil cooler setups) and I had the temps drop from 185 to 150 at full throttle autobahn runs.

This is how it was mounted (added specers later on, that's when I got above numbers, without spacers the temps were a bit higher, around 160)

I'll see if I can find out the exact model I've got & get back to you Tues with any info I can find. It's a B&M cooler & the place I got it from only sells 2 models (but I can't remember which one I bought - hope it's on the receipt!). It's mounted in exactly the same place as TT shows, but is smaller. I think with these 200-r4's it's a balancing act. At high speeds, with lots of cooling air passing through the rad, the trans is usually in OD with the converter locked so is generating less heat. In the lower gears the trans is generating more heat, but less cooling air is passing through the rad, or that's how it seems looking at how the temp guage behaves.

Twin Turbo---the cooler in the top pic is what I'm thinking of.

UK Paul, thank you

The cooler I've got is a B&M Super Cooler. Part no 70268, size of 11" x 7 1/2" x 3/4" 19 000 GVM. If I was to do it again I'd use the one with part no 70255 with a 16 000 GVM rating (11" x 5 3/4" x 3/4") to let the trans run a bit hotter.
