1 intake that clears the stock hood
2 what heads are you running
3 Cam? last cam was a Comp Cam 268 , that car was an Auto .
so i was thinking a little bigger on that , the 71 is a 4 speed
To sound like an old vette , and to drive it every day ,if i like
this is what i am thinking for a new motor
the bock is getting 30 over flat top piston
iron eagle [dart] head 202 or aluminum
comp cam 272 ,with a dual plane intake demon carb , would like to know if the hood will close .
and if anybody has something like it
My 79 has about what you're describing: 30 over flat tops, Dart Iron Eagle 180's, CompCam XE262, Edelbrock Performer EPS Intake and Holley 670 Street Avenger. I topped off the carb with a 3"x14" drop base, offset air clearner. It is tight but just does clear the hood.

thanks does you cam have any lope to it ? or does it sound like a stock cam
The 30-30 might be too rough, but the N+L79 would work. Adding chambered exhaust would complete the "sound" http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...EF4W2NU8K660A1
Or you could install stock style mufflers for a quieter sound.
If you are in the market for heads, go with aluminum (AFR, Dart, Brodix)
Keep the intake volume around 200cc or less and combustion chambers at 64cc (You will have a decent compression ratio with flat tops)
I have the low flat hood on my '71. With the orig air cleaner & q-jet & an Edelbrock Performer 2101 intake - the hood slightly touches the front of the air cleaner.
You may lose a little hp with the old school cam, but it will sound good
