Such a wealth of information on this forum. I've been following it for sometime now....guess it's time I become a member.
My Vette is a 1980, I bought it 21 years ago. It's under going a body off restoration. Powder coated frame, 383, 700R4, dual electric fans, real dual exhaust (stainless), stainless brake/fuel lines, composite front & rear springs.
I have built a temporary harness and attached the radiator so I can run it every once and a while. Now it's time to tackle the body. The number 2 body mount position on the body is completely rusted away. My research shows that GM eliminated the splash pans in approx. 1977/78. They were located horizontally, low on the body, just behind the front wheels. Thankfully you can still buy them (aftermarket). Without them water was constantly being kicked up into the #1 and #2 body mount area.
Could someone tell me how to add pictures to my text.....KEN

Even with splash shields that area rusts away, requiring the rocker channels to be replaced. The problem is compounded because GM in all their wisdom also installed foam pads in those areas that helped hold the moisture there. Been there, done that, so has Brian (Redwingvette, see his post above). Check out his web site, he has some info in there on replacing the rocker channels. I also wrote an article on restoration (stole Brian's pictures) and that article can be seen here:

I think most "Sharks" that have had any kind of rust issues have rocker channels that are on borrowed time. Most owners don't want to know about the problem and will run the car until the body is nearly ready to fall off. Sorry if I sound like I'm ranting, don't want to sound that way. Sounds like you are doing your car right, it's not really that tough a job to replace the channels, hardest part is removing the old ones. They have to be ground off at each of the spot welds, chiseled, or pryed off any way you can. The replacements can be temporarily attached with tech screws until a few pocket welds are in place, then remove the screws and pocket weld everywhere you can. Welcome to this forum, be sure to keep us posted on how your project is shaping up.
