Default Slimey Steering Wheel HELP!!!

The wheel in my 70 gets a sticky, slimey wetness to it after sitting up. I want to keep the original wheel but don't like it like it is. It is still up on jackstands and has been for several years but I plan to have everything finished and be driving it next week. I haven't tried anything yet, except to research the archives for any similar problems, with no luck. My sister had a new Fiat Spider many years ago and the windows got a little fogged regurlarly. I read somewhere that the vinyl the Italians used in them gassed and caused the fogging. Could this steering wheel problem be related? I don't think it's fogging the glass but maybe its a related problem manifesting itself differently. I remember the wheel being a little greasey to the touch the last few years (before I put it on stands) when I'd drive it. I suppose I'll try and scrub it down real good and look for some kind of coating to put on it or rub in. Now it just has the feeling that you've put on a heavy coat of Armor All and forgot to buff it out well. I've had the car since 1971 and haven't driven it much the last decade or so. I plan on it being an alternative daily driver when I get it back on the ground.

I think that happened to mine also, when the wife was helping me clean the car up. I've got the sticky-ness too.

Someone here on the forum recommended I try some white vinegar. This is after the usual suspects: soap and water, Dawn, Simple Green, etc. I haven't tried the Simple Green yet.

I just keep a rag handy, and when cruising I hold on to the vertical spoke. Let us know how it turns out.

I took my wheel off and used simple green and hot water.

Same happened to the steering wheel of my car, after it sat for 1.5 years. WD-40 worked well for me. Just be sure to wash it with something else afterwards, to eliminate the WD-40 smell.
