Need help with emission testing if I can. Trying to get my car through our local emissions testing but it keeps failing due to high CO (Carbon Monoxide) readings.
On the drive test car readings for CO were 4.39% where max. allowable is 3.00%. This is the first year I have had trouble with this. Previous years have been fine. I've "de-tuned" the engine (retarded the timing, cranked down the idle jets, changed the oil, etc...) but can't seem to make any difference to the CO. Any suggestions?? Is this a carb issue?? Any help is appreciated.

Yea - CO is a rich issue. If the jets on the carb have already been reduced then there are other things to check. See if the vapor cannister is soaked with fuel somehow. It will suck raw vapor in and cause faulty readings.
Make sure that the carb is not bleeding. If it's a Q-Jet, the base plugs underneath leak after a while, and drip fuel right into the manifold.
Further to Paul's suggestions above, make sure that the basics are done as well such as a fresh air filter and fresh (but not too fresh) crankcase oil. What kind of engine vent are you running , PCV? Can't remember what was standard in that year. In any case, you could be drawing combustibles from your crankcase and exacerbating your rich condition.

I've also heard to burn the LOWEST octane gas you can find ( fastest burning fuel ). I don't know if will make a difference, but I did this on my '72 454 and passed here in Illinios just fine.
