starter grinding when hot
I've got a 454 w/4 speed, all stock except for sidemount headers. The starter is grinding only when hot; it starts great when cold. I have 0.090 shims on the outside starter bolt only, have the stock heat sheild installed. The front starter mount is missing.
I think I should be using a full shim so that the starter is sitting flush against the starter mounting flange and I will be changing that. I still can't figure out why the grinding only when hot. Is it true the starter only turns when the bendix is fully out?
The ring gear doesn't look so good either; no missing teeth but the teeth are only about 0.130" - 0.150" tall. Is this normal?
I think I need a new ring gear (I'll replace the flywheel) but I would like to wait untill driving season is over to do so.
What do you think?

I had the same issue with my small block.
Its a horrible sound when the bendix nails the flexplate!
I ended up replacing everything so I dont have a definate cure for you. But......
I did find that my flexplate was pretty worn. The teeth were kind of screwed up. I replaced that and now I have no more issues with the grinding.
