EFI with sidepipes on 71
Is anyone out there running sidepipes on their EFI engine the reason why I ask is I'm curious to know how the O2 sensor is located. If they are the sidepipes with the collector just outside the body then the O2 sensor would be visible outside the car right? The O2 sensor needs to sample all cylinders on that side not just one right? Is there other kinds of sidepipes that would fix this problem?
I looked into this extensively this spring. There's a thread somewhere around here where we were discussing it. Chris (69MyWay) ran his like you described above. (Any maybe Zwede did this too??) I really didn't like the idea of seeing the O2 sensor outside of the car, so I ditched the sidepipes and went with an undercar exhaust. Some people have run their cars with the O2 sensor in just one primary but I was warned against doing that by some FI experts. Although it will work, if something goes wrong with any cylinder besides the one that you're sampling, you'll never know.
The only viable option that I saw for doing sidepipes is to do something where the collector is inside the engine bay (ie use regular headers) and then run a big pipe under the frame and 90* around to make your sidepipe. I believe that RollingThunder did his this way. I have some pictures around here somewhre that were sent to me of his car. This time, ground clearance becomes an issue if you try to run a 2.5" or 3" pipe under the frame rail. An oval pipe may make the situation easier.
Those are the options that I saw, but I really didn't like them, so now I'm running an undercar (Mid Americal 2.5" chambered) exhaust system.
Just my 2 cents....

Well i got mine hidden to the point you cant see it, hardly at all,i mounted it on the side of the pipe at the collector towards the frame, and its not leaning down to collect water in it.Works fine.See if i can get a few pics real quick for you.
What i did was drill a hole in side of collector tube then welded a o2 bung into it and screwed it in place. Now i notched the frmae a hair and welded it back up to clear wiring but after i did it ,i had room anyway, but i know now itll clear.
I couldnt get a better picture right now car is up against the side of something and i barley fit in between it but you can see no exposed wiring or 02 sensor.

There hooker sidepipes and im running a 87 trans am tpi setup with everything in my signature at the bottom,so far knock on wood no trouble so far, getting the chip programmed right was the biggest thing but finally got that right.Eventually ill be swapping to a ls-1,which i had the money for but adding a new addition to the house so that money went right out the window, literally.
