Noitced a sound yesterday coming from the 71 engine. After checking all around the top end with the my stetoscope. Got under car, with engine running and touched the scope to oil pan. Found it. Low mettalic tap. Is there any other ideas out there, besides of course a bad rod or main bearing. I was going to pull the heads off and do them this winter due to valve guides. Compression was good on last check. After just finishing my son`s Camaro V-6 rebuilt, was not looking foward to another engine rebuild. Though I would love to add some more HP to the old 270. Any ideas?
Are you sure it isn't a leaking header gasket.
That said shot main bearings sound their worst when you bring the motor up slowly off idle and suddenly the bearing really starts to rattle.
With the door open and the engine idling slowly raise the rpm, no high just up slowly and a bad bearing will show up as a real rattle then go away as you pass through the rpm.

Before you go crazy, Check for an exhaust leak around the exhaust manifolds or headers if you have them. A cracked or warped exhaust manifold or a bad header gasket will produce the same sound as your describing.
