454 lifter noise?

454 lifter noise?
I just bought a 73 454 M21, seems all original with 53K miles. I have this routine I drive it 2 miles to the coffee shop, and it runs quiet. Stop, wait an hour. On the way home it has what sounds like a lifter noise. Does this make any sense? Any ideas what it might be, or if it's a lifter why it would do it only in that sequence? Otherwise it comes and goes with no apparent logic, but is usually quiet. Anything else that could make that kind of noise, like a heat riser, EGR? There is no smog pump, no a/c, no ps, etc. The engine seems to still run smooth, whether it's making the noise or not.
