I'm planning to install Hooker sidemount headers and side pipes on my 76.
My question is about the mufflers. Do they install between the header and sidepipe, or do they actually go on the inside the sidepipe somehow. I saw a picture of the tube muffler beside the the side pipe on Ecklers and the tube muffler looked like it may be a smaller diameter thet would go inside. Or does anyone run theirs without any mufflers?
I haven't bought anything yet, so I just wanted to see what others who have this system think.

The Hooker sidemount mufflers are glass pack-type units that actrually slip into the side tubes.
I have mine completely open. You wouldn't want to drive them on the street that way except occasionally and just for a bit of fun. Think about it--you have a couple of factors working:
1. The exhaust comes directly out of the side of the car instead of underneath or to the rear. It's really in your face.
2. The Hookers have 1 3/4" primaries that dump into what is, in effect, a 4" diameter, 30-something-inch long MEGAPHONE.
My 406 sounds like a B-29 coming in on a wing and a prayer without the mufflers. I love it. Have fun.
One end has a slightly larger diameter than the other end. Drop it into the tube smaller end first. The larger end will stop against the swede of the tube. Use hi-temp antiseize cmpound so you have a fighting chance of getting the tubes off the headers on down the road if you need. Also, look at the I.D. of the Hooker mufflers. Terrible. If you want the full HP of your engine, go with the JCL spiral inserts.

Mufflers slide in tubes but the Hooker mufflers are junk. Glasspacks are too loud. Reverse flows suck too much power. Get the JCL spiral turbo baffles. www.spiralturbobaffles.com They have a great note and I can still hear my radio with the top and windows down on my 'vert.
