I went for a ride today to stretch the old legs of the vette. Got to my destination and parked. 2 minutes later I got in to start and I turned the key and nothing happened. The gen and seat belt light went on, but no noise, no nothing. I turned the key again and again and it wouldn't make a noise. Radio still worked, interior lights came on. So I let it sit for a few minutes becuase luckily I was at a GMC dealership and went to get a mechanic to look at it. Well when I got back in 10 minutes later it started right up.
Forgive me for being a noob, but do the starters overheat? It sure seems something overheated and needed to cool off. After that, it worked fine the rest of the day.
Thanks for any help and hope to see some of you guys trying to forget about Ivan for a day down at the Pier in St. Pete.
Starter heat soak. Very common. Cheap to fix, too.
A fresh AC Delco starter solenoid and a shorter solenoid spring does the job. I can't remember the part number for the spring right now...hopefully somebody will chime in with the number.
I did this two years ago and haven't had a problem since. And I live in south Texas!
Was your car over heated at the time? Most likely if you have a lot of stopping and starting or about 60k miles on starter its the brushes that are wore out. This is always a good time to install bushings.
Not overheating, but just standard Florida September day. 90 degrees and humid. Temp guage never broke 200 and it only has 19800 miles on it. It worked fine after that and I even fired it up in the garage after I got home and let it sit for a while.
