I want to replace (not convert) the 85 MPH speedometer in my '80 Corvette with a new 200 MPH speedometer (or 140 or 160 etc). What is the best route? Looks like I would need to just do the Auto Meter thing.

I took the leap and order all new Auto Meter gauges (Pro-Comp black faced), including the 200 MPH speedometer.
I have a '73 that has an '80 interior... there have been problems with some of the gauges. I'm putting in a new motor (and probably transmission), so want to make sure all my gauges work right, as well as start the odometer at zero.
Looks bigger to me... haven't actually tried to install it... just compared it from the outside. I like the 200 MPH better anyway. At shows, little kids like to look at the speedometer to "See how fast it can go".
Somebody painted it black, but you may want to consider it as a core for another one, or with a little luck you may be able to clean this one up. If it was me ( and the unit worked) I would get it,and then just replace the face, which is a lot less $$$$$ than the whole unit. Good luck.
I can get you a 140 or 165 mph speedo unit. They sell for 200 and I'll pick up the shipping for a forum member.
They're rebuilt and look stock the 140s were in 78-79s the 165s never happened but can be easily installed in a 78-82.
