I'm getting a slight thump when accellerating from idle, and shifting. It doesn't seem bad, just an annoyance now. It does it maybe 40% of the time. It feels/sounds like its thumping right at the dif.
I just rebuilt the rear suspension--bushings, shocks, and I greased all the u-joints & tried to twist all the shafts to see is there was any play, but couldn't find any. The rear axle shaft joints looked better that the driveshaft joints.
My question is, which u-joint/joints are most often replaced.
Or which joint to start with. I don't want to wind up replacing the 4 in the rear only to have it keep doing it. So can I test them somehow w/o taking them off??
Or could it be something else?--It's not the posi

The front of the differential mounts to the frame using a rubber doughnut and sleeve. When the rubber deteriorates you will often get a clunk when shifting into forward or R. gears. Jack you car up, support with stands and crawl under there with a good light. You will want to inspect that rubber mount and R&R as necessary. Very easy to do, just a bit of knuckle scraper.

Mine clicks too but we need to spell out the difference between click and the diff. thump. That thump is indeed the diff. rubber donut and is very common to replace.
Clicking on the other hand could be U-joints. In my case it's the splines on the stub shafts that are clicking. The axles are worn and even putting new halfshaft flanges in them did not keep them from being noisy with clickety-click sounds when I accelerate.

Nope it's certainly a thump, not a click. I can feel it at the center rear of the car. I just looked at that bushing, and it looked fine, I will get under there tomorrow, and yank around on it some......

Don't check it that way. Have someone sit in the car and hold the brake and shift back and forth while you look under from the side at the bushing. You will see it jump up and down if it's the problem. The weight will keep it snug looking when not under the loads. The bushing is actually a 2 parter and the top can look good while the bottom can be missing.

If it is the bushing, I had mine replaced for only $100. Easy job, but I was in the middle of moving so I had my favorite mom/pop garage do it.
I didn't get a chance to check it today, I have been trying to drive the car every day & make my list of what needs to be done. Well tires just jumped to #1 w/a bullet.
I was on the interstate about 1 mile from my exit just cruising about 80mph when all of a sudden I hear/feel a click, click then BOOM. The right front literally exploded.
