I did it once on an 86 F*#&d F150 after adjusting the valve lash and they all let loose 1 mile from home! Bent a few push rods, loud clatering, then would not run. Had to walk back and get all my tools and redo using double nuts locked together. I do not know what is acceptable but new would be best. What keeps them from losening up?

I usually re-use them depending on how tight they feel on the stud while turning them. I would spring for new ones if you're worried just to be sure. The cars that I have re-used them on were just GM daily drivers but I never had any problems with them working loose.
