Powder Coating a Frame
I've been wondering exactly what can be powder coated. I want to coat my frame, and I've already got a quote from a local shop that'll do it for me. What I forgot to ask them at the time, however, is if I'd have to strip any bondo off the frame in order for it to be powder coated. I use bondo at the joints on my frame, to make it look less blocky. I don't know if I'd end up powder coating if I'd have to take it all off. Not that the extra work would matter, but I like the look it gives.
You have to remove the bondo from the frame to have it powder coated. I had mine fill welded on the seams and steel plated on the sections where the C channels come together to give the frame a boxed look... however this is very expensive to do (about six times the cost of powder coating the frame). If you want to have the smooth lines you need to stick with the bondo and paint which is what is done on the show cars.
