Flood Car Value
Guys,
I have been watching a local used car lot that had a 75 or 76 Vette that was rough, paint was bad and back and front bumpers are both wrecked. That was all I could see riding by and wasn't real interested. We got hit hard with floods past week-end and stop and saw the car today and it had water up over the seats and about 2-3 inches up the backs. From what I could see it looked like the heater controls are wet but the gauges are dry.
My first thought is all it is worth is its good set of ralley wheels, a 4-speed tranny and rear and parts it out from there. My questions is what is a fair price for the car and should it just be parts out our could it be worth saving? I have to consider that it is probably a $10,000 car when done.
I have access to a shop for the winter and can have good paint put on for cost of material.
Would like to hear your opinions,

Not much. Most of the interior and wiring should be considered ruined. THe rearend,engine, and trans are likely to need rebuilt if water was that high. This would be a total frame-off rebuild job. This would be $500 or less in my opinion.

That car is a flood car and should have a salvage title for the rest of its life. That would severely effect its future value. If it hasn't been run the engine and trans are salvagable if you can get it out of the water and torn down immediately The value of this car is negligible, even as a parts car the only thing worthwhile would be body panels and drivetrain. Interior , gages, brakes will all be unusable. Flood water is a bad animal it destroys almost everything it touches. That car will not be avalable for sale for weeks until insurance claims are settled. By then it will be too late for anything. Run from it as fast as you can.

Go see the man - do a deal right now - trade him some crates of beer to allow you to drain the trans, engine, etc and fire it up straight away.
Use a space heater to cook it gently for about 3 days - to hell with the interior - they are cheap as burgers.
He can get his money with a bit of seaweed scattered around the interior and you can have a cheap car that you already started on.

Where the hell have you been shopping? I just finished an interior resto and wasn't nothin cheap about it.
Don't buy the car unless you plan on doing a full body off resto and replacing everything electric. Anything cloth, consider it ruined. Anything that holds fluid, must be drained, inspected and either replaced or refilled.

Had a whole new interior for my 74 cos it had been left in the rain for about 5 years - opened the doors to find 2 green swimming pools !!
All new interior from Ecklers - looked sooo good when completed.

Why rewire entire car - thought wires were made of metal encased for protection - or are they actually chocolate covered in sugar.
As for electronics, same applies.
Once had a pissed off DJ, who, on his last night poured bottles of beer into the mixer and CD players.
I found out the next night - took them all apart, poured boiling water through the whole lot - force dried them, etc.
Sent the whole lot back to Numark and Pioneer for inspection and they sent them back as perfect - nothing else needs doing - many $ thousand saved.
I just don't get the "off with its head " attitude

With electronics as long as it is allowed the time to dry out completely you will not have any problems. As for the engine and tranny that may be a different matter altogether. Of course you don't know what kind of shape they were in to begin with.
