Default Critters

I dont have a closed garage but a carport instead. Either chipmunks or squirrels are getting up under the hood and trying to nest and leaving piles of nutshells on my intake manifold. Any suggestions on how to convince them they dont wanna be there?

Get a dog?
Years ago before i built my shop, my car was left out like yours.had a problem with neighbors kitty sleeping on top of the car. i took 2 large beach towels and placed one on the front and one on the back.i then sprinkled chinese red pepper all over the towels. after the cat walked thru the pepper, he did what cats do and cleaned his paws. that cat could run!! never saw him aroud my car again.

may sound stupid but a stuffed cat (not an ex real one ) that looks semi real can act like a scarecrow (scarecat??) to rodents. It worked for mice problems in my garage

We have two indoor cats. I wonder if I used blankets with thier scent on em to surround the area around the car. Might that work? I dont like the idea of them dead from poison and rotting up in my frame somewhere.

Well, I have a cat and they certainly leave plenty of hair around - worth a try.

An old trick to keep dogs from piddling on car wheels/tires is to put moth ball crystals in the area -- dogs don't like the smell --- might work with your varmits......

Default Mothballs all the way!!!

Mothballs may work. Crush up a bunch and put them on the ground where your car is parked (especially under the engine). Maybe even a bag of mothballs under the hood until they decide to leave your car alone.
We use mothballs to keep mice/rats/other critters out of the tack boxes where we keep saddles. Having a $2000 saddle chewed up by a mouse will really get you angry! I have an entire box of mothballs strewn about the floor of my tack box. Never seen a mouse in there since I put them there. Before mothballs- I had at least 3 or 4 in my there every time I opened it.

Cheers!

Ok then we will give the mothballs a try. First I'll remove the current evidence by vacuuming up all the piles of nutshells off the top of the engine. When its all clean I'll spread ground up mothballs under the car. If they work it should be easy to tell. The shells will cease to accumulate. It will take some time for results but I'll post back. Thanks for the help.

Default Irish Spring Soap

I had a rat/mouse problem and used Irish Spring soap in the interior and a piece under the hood. It seemed to work, but I'll neverknow for sure, I found the rat dead on one of the sticky traps.

The mothballs do work. I put them in a small plastic container and set the container on the manifold. Just dont forget to remove it before you start the car.

The wife's grandparents live out in the sticks. They put the hood up on their cars to keep the rodents out of the engine compartment.

I tried the mothball route- didn't work on Canadian mice- they left turds all over the intake manifold and chewed into the hood insulation.
