That parking lot was way to small. To many light poles and to close to spectators. The people who set up and were running this should never be allowed to set something like this up. I was at an autocross this year set up by SCCA. Only the workers were on the course way out of harms way. That is just poor planning. Having spun my car out on the course it is amazing how fast these cars will get out of control even at low speeds. I thought I was a decent driver until I did this. I don't know jack about the dynamics of how a car loses control so fast. It woke me up for sure.

Just the sound is enough to make me cringe! That's gotta hurt!
When I did some autocross awhile back I saw a car that was going straight just immediately and without any warning swerve to the right...apparently breaking a tie rod or something. Even at slow speeds (<60mph) vehicles can do extensive damage to a human body. It's easy to die from something like that due to your head hitting the windshield. In situations like that I figure it's better to face the approaching vehicle and jump up before it gets to you. In which case the vehicle would have slowed down during that second you are in the air; plus, facing forward allows your arms to protect your head from hitting the windshield.
Gruesome video though.

Very poor planning on the course layout. I believe (not verified) SCCA rules state a minimum of 75 ft between vehicle and spectators in low speed events.
Video cameras at autocross events and accidents like this may one day kill the sport. SCCA safety coordinators please make sure your events go smoothly.

This video was on The Learning Channel last night. It was part of a one hour show that had all kinds of very ugly sports mishaps. In none of the videos that they showed did anyone die but it had some very bad accidents on footage. I am sure TLC will reair this video it was on last night at 9 PM EST.
In this particular video they said that the person that got hit only suffered from a concussion and some bruises. A very lucky person indeed.

If I recall properly when this clip was posted a year or two ago someone on the forum was at that event and said that the person who was struck by the car was told several to stay back.
It's good to see that clip again. If I am ever tempted to stand too close I'll just think of how fast a car can get out of control!!!
