Default 196hp Bye-Bye

Just dropped my 80 off at SpeedTek...

Per the previous post...we made 196hp at the rear wheels about a month ago. Pick it up next Thursday with the 64cc RPM heads (polished and ported) and the XE274 cam installed.

Will post the new dyno numbers shortly there after...

Dammit, slow down. I can't keep up with your never ending pace.

How stock is was your motor before sending it in?

Damn, our cars are closer than I thought. Mine has the performer intake, an Edelbrock Performer 650 and a set of headers. I also have dual exhaust, but no mufflers yet. Did the Flame Thrower HEI make a difference?

I know my engine has a real, real aggressive cam. I'm thinking about swapping it out for something closer to stock. My father in law (lifetime mechanic) thinks I should go back to the stock cam. I'm thinking a little more performance oriented. First I gotta figure out the specs on teh stock cam. Then we can decide where to go with that.

Don't know that I saw a difference with the Flame Thrower. Understand it helps at higher RPMs and has a cleaner burn.

The L-48 cam is absolutely horrible, especially considering you have a 4-spd. Powerband is 1600-3200 rpm. Odds are you tach much higher than that on the freeway - expect better fuel economy at cruise range going with a midrange cam.

My Crane 272 is a real nice cam - Pick something in the mid-to-high 210 range if you don't plan on changing out heads. Comp CS268 and Crane 272 are pretty close to the L-82 cam.

OK... Drum Roll.........

Just picked the car up and LOVE the idle! Happend to arrive at Speedtek while they were doing a dyno run and I could not believe my ears!

Here are the before and after numbers:

BEFORE AFTER (XE274 and new RPM 64cc heads - ported)

HP 196.0 264.4
TOR 273.5 307.6

That's all at the rear tires! Calculating for a 20% loss from the flywheel that puts it at about 320hp at the flywheel! Not bad considering the car came out of GM in 1980 with 195hp at the flywheel.

Someone use the term "sheep to beast" in an earlier post. I couldn't agree more! Slow start...then full power breaks rear loose...once she grabs she continues to pull hard... shift to 2nd at 5,000 and rear comes loose slightly again! Can really feel the pull from around 2,500 to 5,000!

I'll post the dyno chart once I get home and can scan.

THANKS FOR ALL OF THE ADVISE FROM EVERYONE! THIS FORUM IS GREAT!!!

Hope not... Fastest 0 to the Speed Limit.... And a little rubber left behind. Just pulled it in the garage...think I donated about 10,000 miles of Goodyear to the Texas roads this evening....and only drove about 70 miles...

Shoot me an email next time your over there during the day and I'll bring to lunch at Angelos. Oh great to hear the car is running like a bat out of hell.
