I get a LOUD CLUNK when shifting into drive or reverse from park or neutral. Does not clunk or chatter in turns. No unusual diff noise while driving or turning. Ring & Pinion backlash is less than 0.100". New Posi dope w/additive, New U-Joints all (6), Trailing arms have been rebuilt with new bushings & wheel bearings, All rear suspension rubber bushings have been replaced. Rear diff case is not cracked or broken. ALL bolts have been checked and rechecked for tightness. Trans just rebuilt and very carefully checked for tolerances. Trans output yoke tight and not broken. Any help would be greatly respected.

i had this prob. on my 76 turned out to be the bolts that hold the rear dif to the frame. they were not tourqued to specs. took me about a month of befor i found the prob. hope this helps.
The easiest way to see where the clunk is coming from is to take it to a garage that has a lift you drive onto and with the wheels chucked and the brake applied, out the transmission from forward to reverse and see where the noise is coming from. It sounds like u-joints, but also check the front of the differential mount to see if it shifting there where the bushing meets the frame
I have the same problem with my auto. Have checked everything, can't find anything external to the rear end I figured it was the gear wear internal to the rear end, guess that will be a winter project.
I replaced the tranny mount on my 80 auto over the weekend. My car had also been thumping hard when putting into D or R. While it still bumps a little, it's MUCH better with the new mount. But considering the old mount was separated that's hardly a surprise...
I was able to change the mount laying in my driveway using a jack to lift the trans.
