I just bought a 454 block with Flat top pistons. The heads that went with the deal are the 049 casting...122cc chambers. With flat top piston, anyone have any idea what my compression will be? I was thinking of going to an early casting # like the 215s or something, but will that make my compression too high. I wouldn't mind being around 10:1? And anyone have a cam suggestion for me. Have 3.08 rear, and am going to 4sp stick. Edelbrock intake and Quadrajet, elec ign, and hedman hedders with factory style sidepipes. Shooting for 450hp and 500 lbs tq. Thanks in advance.
The 049 heads are 73 and will get you about 8.25 to 8.5 compression.
I would go with either the 215's or 802, 206, 702 or 063 they are all closed chamber and in the 98-101 cc range. That should get you to about 9.5 compression.
With the 3.08 rear I would stick to a 268-270 duration.

Even with a flat top piston my comp would be that low?I thought the std pistons in that era were dished slightly or had relief valleys in them.
The 049's will flow real well with a little cleanup of the casting flash in the runners. As far a CR goes the stock flat top pistons was about 8.25:1. Exclusive of head milling or playing tricks with head gaskets you can go into say a Speed Pro catalog you can select the CR, but keep it around 9.5 with Iron Heads.
All in all you need to count on a rebuild of the heads, valves, springs, guides etc and a new bottom end if you are changing the pistons.
Cam - check emission laws in TX. If you still need a test, stay with a duration of 220 or less. Otherwise the Comp Cam 268 is a good cam for BB's or the Crane 274 or 284 series. Do some searching on the forum for posts on cam selection and there is a ton of info.
The rest of the combo is ok. In the future you might want to go a little deeper on the rear end. A 3.08 will cruise nice but be slow in the lower gears. Recommendation is a 3.73:1 with a 4 speed.
