Other than the fact the Turbo 400 is a heavy duty trans, and the Turbo 350 is a medium duty trans. How can they be identified other than looking at the pan?
Look at the pan but given the choice I feel the 350 is the better choice. While lighter duty it sucks up about 35 LESS horsepower then the 400, can be made to shift very good and will stand up fine behind a small block.
a 200-4r will be worth every penny...its almost half the weight of the other 2, less rotational mass, and there are manufacturers who can make it durable up to 800hp, not to mention the overdrive capability.
again though, way heavier, only 3 gears, and the slight hole shot advantage will be nixed by the weight and rotating and friction disadvantages....unless youre a DRAG racer, Id go for a 4 speed auto any day.
TH400 has the vacuum modulator on the side, TH350 it's on the back. TH400 has a male spade electrical terminal on the LH side for kickdown. TH350 has a cable on the RH side for kickdown.
What the hell happens inside a TH400 to use up 35 bhp MORE than a 350,
and,
while on figures, how much bhp does a 350 take up more than say a 5 speed manual,
and finally, although my 700r4 was the worst box I ever owned, was it just a bad friday unit, and people are actually happy with them, especially when worked over for more reliability ??
