Default HELP! From Stock Sidepipe Owners!!

I have determined that there is no glass packing or very little packing in the sidepipes I purchased new off EBAY from a dealer named HRVETTE.
The pipes are as loud as if they were just straight pipes with no mufflers. The sound is way to loud and they also sound awful.

HRVETTE sells these pipes everyday for $325.00 a set on EBAY. I think I got ripped, as I beleive that if I had gone to Ecklers, or Mid America, they would have been glass packed and been quieter and sounded better.

My question is where did you buy your stock sidepipes, and on a basis of 1 to 10, with 10 being straight pipes with no mufflers, how would you rate your sound.

I ran stock pipes for a while, bought them locally used.

I also ran 3.5" straight pipes. Loud enough to make your ears ring.

The stock pipes were a 3 to 4 in loudness

I have stock side pipes on my 69 BB. Came on the car. Neihbors sometimes complain/comment when I leave early in the morning for a show or trip. On the hiway i can talk to my wife with just raising my voice a little. we get no ringing. Go to http://webpages.charter.net/cmoor1/Vette and click on the arrival1.mpg file and you can get some idea what I'm talking about. This is when it was delivered.

A local guy had them for sale through the Vette club.
The are stock style, but new.
They are loud, but not open pipes loud...

Look just like mine. Also I emailed the dealer from EBAY, and he said that there is no packing in the sidepipes at all, and that this was GM spec. So in reality, they really are straight pipes.

Let me ask you this, I have not yet put on the covers. Once I do will that quiet them down some?????

Not noticably no....I dont think the factory pipes were packed either, and they are loud enough to be sure. On the freeway they arent too bad - but get into it and it sounds like the end of the world.

Maybe GM thought there'd be some baffling with the double chamber.

Send me your email, I have a sound/video clip of my side exhaust + new engine.

You guys really don't want stock muffers, those things suck big time too loud and don't flow worth a damn.

Buy a set of JCL's ( if you have lots of $$ ) or use summits auger style mufflers, 3 per side ( if you have fabrication skills )

Both are quieter and work better. Really

Nope, no packing in them. I think mine are original and damn loud too. The double chanbered resonator doesnt seem to do much. I ended up adding a short glasspack inline with them. At least now my teeth dont rattle.

Thanks to an email from a fellow forum member, I contacted a company called Allens Mufflers online. The owner was great, and it turns out that he makes the sidepipes for HRVETTE on Ebay. Anyways, he is sending me 2 short small glasspacks that will go inline between the manifold and the pipes, and that should do the trick.

My thanks again to all the forum members I emailed, and I got replies from each and every one. The forum has a great bunch of guys!!!!

I'd like to see a picture of that when you get them. I can't see how you can add anything to the system and still keep the same side exhaust orientation.

They are original 1969 factory covers with newer (1yr) pipes. The covers are far from perfect but so is my Vette. They have pitting in a couple areas and both end pieces will need replaced. I could also go over the insulators and re-do the screw there. That'll make a nice "winter" project.

I got them from a fellow forum member who was looking to go back to a stock setup. We worked out a great deal and both got what we wanted.

I'm really considering trying the C2 covers, much like the Vette Bullshark photographed the other day.

I agree with 427V8. Stock pipes are crap. I changed from a 2 1/2" exhaust system to stock side pipes many years ago - got the pipes direct from a Chevy dealer and they made everything worse. Performance went down and noise went up. The sidepipes were louder and had a tinny sound.

If your not running a highly modified engine and you want an alternative that works under stock covers, try a set of pipes from Stainless Works. They claim their pipes flow better and are quieter. I just installed a set and they perform as advertised. The performance is back and they are quieter (but not quiet - sidepipes will never be quiet). The sound is deeper, and although it is still loud, it sounds more detached - like its coming from outside the car. With the old pipes it felt like it was coming right up my spine. My goal was to really quiet the car down, so I almost sent them back to try an under-car system, but I like the look of sidepipes and my wife says I'm not rattling the windows in the house anymore, so I'm keeping them.

I'd like to see a picture too. I think you may have to do some fabricating.
