Lagging Tach needle

the tach on my 72 works ok at normal speeds, but when I get on it, it seems to be floating around 3K rpm, then it starts to catch up, then it bounces a bunch, then trans shifts and it seems to catch again. I just replaced tach cable(greased the hell out of it) and the dist tach drive gear, but did not change the distributor shaft. Anyone else have this problem? Other than the typical needle bounce, my 69 would wrap around nicely.

My dad's '66 did that. He replaced it with an electronic tach, so I don't know the fix...I'd guess (because of the bounce) that the square drive is stripped at one end.

I was thinking of going to the guts of a 75 elec tach and putting my faceplate on it as others on the forum have done, but was hoping to only do it as a last resort.
