Flowmasters will sound like crap without pipes behind them. Go with either Dynomax's or Magnaflow's "straight thru" style. great flow and sound, but a tad pricy.

What do you mean "without pipes behind them"? There will be 3" pipes going into them and coming out of them I believe. Is that not pipes "behind them"?

Ah, so they will sound OK as long as I have some pipes coming out the back?
I take it you don't Fevre? How you like the sound of yours? You got 3-chamber?
How are you going pipes out the back? Not talking about the couple inches coming off the muffler and the tips, talking long tail pipes like the ones on cars that have the mufflers under the car.
I actually add some resonator 3" tips to my 40's and it did calm it down just a touch but it is a aquired taste to be sure, I like it.
No offense, folks. Homie wants a quiet, high-flow muffler. Flow master isn't known for their quietness (quite the opposite) and I've not seen any numbers that indicate their flow is any higher (in most cases much LESS) than the quieter competition. If you want to SOUND powerful, Flowmaster is great. If you want to BE powerful...look for a straight-thru or spiral design
OH, I should add that the X pipe increases combustion chamber scavenging, which increases power. Definitely use an X Dr. Gas, Magnaflow, and Bassani are good.
Also be aware that Dynomax Super Turbo and Dynomax Ultra Flo use totally different construction techniques. The Ultra Flo has about DOUBLE the flow of the Super Turbo. Magnaflow uses a straight-thru design on all their mufflers. Again, Pricy but good.
1. If I have an X pipe, that means the mufflers will have to be at the back, rather than under, the car?
2. Flowmasters will generally not flow as well as other designs that are out there (straigh trough or spiral)?
3. For maximum flow, I want a Dynomax Ultraflow, a Magnaflow, a "Dr. X", or a Bassani? Which of these is generally better? Not too concerned with cost.
I want the car to be heard well when reved, but not so loud it drives me crazy just putting around town.
From what I've heard, Dr. Gas makes one of the best X crossovers out there.
As far as I know all C3's have their mufflers behind the rear bumper. Not much room underneath.
Flowmaster flows better than the average passenger-car muffler, but when put up against performance mufflers they tend to pale in flow numbers. The thing about 'Masters is their signature sound. They've got that baritone resonance and sort of hollow sound...similar to a open sidepipe but not near as loud. When a car has them, you know it. They don't suck, but I don't think they fit your requirements either.
I have Magnaflow on everything but my Vette, which has sidepipes. However, I think I'd have to say Dynomax Ultra Flo SS for a Vette. They have a bit meaner, more unrefined sound. I guess it depends what you're trying to accomplish. My Lincoln with Magnaflows sounds like a BMW M5 . A friend's Lincoln with Dynomax sounds more like a Mustang GT. Not quite apples to apples, though. I've got dual resonators and he doesn't. His pipes are also 1/4" larger. Every little change like that alters the sound, so it's kind of trial-n-error unless you copy another system exactly. Borla and Magnaflow are nearly the same in tone to my ear. I don't have any personal experience with the others.
