Default 700R4 interlock linkage question

Question for those who have done a 700R4 conversion.

I'm just about done putting a 700R4 into my 73, and I have a question about the interlock cable bracket. Will the bracket from a T350 or T400 work on the 700R4? Or do I need to custom build a bracket?

Thanks,

John.

Interlock cable bracket???

If you are talking about the throttle valve (TV) cable, the best setup around is the TV-Made EZ kit from Bow Tie Overdrives. It will be the cable, bracket, and all the adapters needed to set the cable pull geometry correctly.

Nope. Got that one handled. I'm talking about the bracket that mounts to the transmission just in front of the shift lever, and holds the lower end of the sheath for the interlock cable. The interlock cable is the cable that locks your steering wheel when you put the car in park (or reverse on 4-speeds).

Probably most people don't use them-I didn't. Be interesting to see what others did.

If used it might not allow you to shift it into 1st which is pretty much useless anyways with the 700r4 and 3.73+ rear end, that is my combo in my formula and first gear is all smoke.

Makes sense. So just fix it in the unlocked position I presume. I guess there's really no way it could happen, but it would be pretty ugly if your steering wheel locked while driving.

The wheel only locks when the ign switch is in the off postion, the lock cable keeps the ign switch from going into the off postion so if the lever somehow swings down only thing that will happen will be you won't be able to get the key out. I have driven mine for about 3 years and the lever has never moved.

BB and 700r4 = clouds of smoke! Hope you increased your tire budget.

yellow73BB i'm a couple of weeks behind you on this one, i thought i had it all figured out on paper (until this post) .... on my 77 the transmission is not locked when the steering wheel is locked. should it be? pls let me know how you resolve this because i have all the parts for this conversion in the garage and am just waiting for the cooler weather to arrive to take the car out of commision and start the swap. How hard was the throttle valve linkage and shifter conversion to set up? thks bob

:o Oops, should have thought about what I was posting before posting. Of course the wheel will only lock if in the lock position. :o I'm really looking forward to that 3.06 first gear

Bob, I did my own TV cable thing, and I think it might be wrong right now. I think it pulls the cable too much. I am using a throttle body fuel injection system from a 90's vintage chevy vehicle, and it didn't have the TV hookup, so I welded one on. Also, I had to significantly modify my throttle linkage to make everything fit under the hood. I did find an interesting TV cable on ebay though. It has a outer sheath that you can change the length of. You just loosen a collar and make the sheath the length you need. Then you cut the inner cable to the right length. Pretty slick, but I have now idea where to get another one like it.

i simply removed mine. I don't remember why. Maybe because it was limiting the range of the shifter as was stated earlier, not being able to pull it down into first.

I just moved the lever on the colum up in the lock position but this could be dangerous if you ever turn you engine off while driving. I did this once when listening for a noise in the rear to be able to hear better. The steering wheel locked as i was trying to negotiate a small curve in the road. After panicking for a few seconds i quicly turned the ignition back on, unlocking the steering wheel.

So the correct solution is to make the cable work.

i just went for the bowtie overdrive throtle valve kit do they have one for your fuel injection set up? it may be easier then trying to engineer one? How about the shifter conversion what was that like to install?

The bowtie shifter conversion was easy, and worked well. I didn't want to spend the money for their TV system, and it's more fun/challenge to do it myself. That's the kind of stuff I enjoy. Driving the car occasionally is merely a way to take a break from working on it.

Don't forget that TV cable has to be adjusted perfectly! If it's off by 1/16", you can toast the TH700R4!!
www.bowtieoverdrives.com has lots of info on that.

For the 200-4R, I made a new bracket and still have the cable hooked up. It doesn't keep you from getting in to first. The stroke from Park to first does not change, just the positions from park to reverse, neutral, OD is closer together. This made it so the neutral safety switch had to be tweaked a little so backup lights come on at the right time and it will only start in the correct positions.

Thanks for the input. I got the neutral/backup switch to work OK I think. I'll see if I can make a bracket for the interlock cable.
