Default Glacier Park, MT in October

I just wanted to share my recent trip in my `79. I left Minot, North Dakota for a visit to my parents who live in Spokane, Washington. I followed Highway 2 to Glacier National Park in Montana. While filling up in Cutbank, MT., I was asked the same old question of what year is your car. I was polite and told him it was a '79. Thinking to myself that he probably does not even know what kind of car I am driving anyway. To top it off, he informed me that it was not a practical car for logging roads. Once again, I held my smart comments and responded with your right about that. I looked at his early brown 1980 Ford 1/2 ton with a camper on the back. He had a fur trap dangling from his rearview mirror. I thought to myself........how practical is a fur trap on your rearview mirror.

My timing could not have been better for driving through the Rocky Mountains. The leaves were turning color and falling off the trees. I would keep looking in my rearview mirror, and watch the leaves being blown off the highway by my, impractical for logging roads, corvette. I am glad that I kept my mouth shut to wise cracks. I feel sorry for the poor guys who will never have my experiences.

I took the entrance of East Glacier, MT. and came out at the border of Canada. I then doubled back to Browning, MT and joined up with Highway 2. Just outside of Troy, MT., I took Highway 59 south to HWY 200 and entered the area surrounding Sandpoint, ID. The drive was long and twisty following lakes and rivers.

Thanks for reading. I hope this will inspire a similar adventure to someone on the forum.

If you took the East entrance, you must have gone right past the Visitor Center at Logan Pass... I built and installed the exhibits in the VC about 13 yrs. ago. (I think they have been removed for refurbishment)

Isn't Going to the Sun Road a trip???

I'd love to do it in my Vette....

Took a trip from New Orleans LA. to montana last summer went to San Antonio then up through New Mexico, and Colorado never been through there before. I didn't have the vette at the time but was in my Mercedes E-430SE and had a blast on those mnt roads. Montana is beautifull and we had a wonderfull time. People there are very hospitable and I would love to do it again.

I was born and raised in Montana and know those roads well. In fact, the first time I went down the "Going to the Sun" highway it was on a bicycle.... and no, I didn't pedal back up.

I still have relatives in the Kalispell area and played high school basketball in Browning and Cut Bank. Those are all great areas in Spring, Summer and Fall, but let me tell you they can be damn cold and windy for a few months there in the winter time. Not exactly a Corvette climate if you get my (snow) drift.....

I've been to Glacier Park a couple of times and it's by far my favorite National Park. The drive on Going-to-the-Sun HWY is gorgeous. It has all the beauty of Yosemite and Yellowstone, but without any of the crowds.

Some of my favorite trips have been to MT...Bozeman, Missoula, Whitefish, etc. Such a beautiful state. Reading your post makes me want to pull out some of my old pictures, get the fly-rod ready, and head back out to MT.

I spent some time in Glacier in August back around 1971. Most beautiful park I've ever seen. Sunny day in the 80's...and i'm standing in snow up to my waist!! I'd love to revisit in my Vette as you did. Great place...glad you enjoyed it.

Yep, Glacier National Park is absolutely stunning. I've ridden my Hog up there 3 times, from Ashland, Virginia. Montana is a beautiful state. That would be a very cool road trip, in the Old Black Chevy!

And the people up there are genuinely kind.

I live just north of Cut Bank.
I love the place - except for certain winter days..

Maybe it is time to arrange a Glacier County group cruise in the summer of 2005?
