I got heard from my mechanic about the vette, and it wasn't good news. I was having trouble upshifting into second gear with my TH400, so I used the forum search to figure out if it was something small or not. I thought I was going to get away with just a vacuum modulator, but NO! It turns out it is completely missing 2nd gear and I am due for a rebuild
I also suspected my master cylinder to be faulty due to the spongy pedal and my mechanic conformed that needs changed as well.
So he told me that it would probably be about $400-500 for the rebuild. Does this sound reasonable? Or should I just buy a new tranny?
I am kinda strapped for money right now so please dont suggest getting a tremec or a 6-speed.
Thanks
Dan
That's a typical, reasonable cost for this transmission. Be sure to get a warranty. And maybe pick up a Transgo reprogramming kit to firm up the shifts so that you never have this problem again. The factory setting on the valve body was to slip from gear to gear so that the customer didn't notice the gear changes (think Cadillac, Buick, etc.). I wouldn't go with a used transmission; better the knowledge of a solid rebuild than the chance of having to do this again in a year or two.
The price decent on the tranny rebuild. I just rebuilt my Th400 and I spent about $300 for parts less a new TC. I used the B&M transkit and installed a HD drum from an earlier car so that added to the cost. Does this include removing and installing the tranny too?
Replacing a M/C isn't bad. Get a new unit instead of a rebuilt one cost is about $60 although I have a source for new(USA) M/C $45 shipped. Trick is to bench bleed it first then bleed the whole system.
