Default Vacumm Question for a 1970!

I finished my rebuild of my 350 a while ago and for the first time I took it out on the interstate and opened it up. It was very sluggish and the most rpm in third (Turbo 400 Auto) I could get was about 3500. Two questions: Why the low RPM, and at that RPM the left headlight and the wiper door came up. Anyone?

do your headlights and wiper door work normally? and do they work properly now? sounds almost like a hose slipped off or cracked, I can't explain why the wiper door and only one headlight came up. Did only one headlight come up because the one that didn't come up has a bad vacumn diaphram? Although the vacumn system is seemingly hard to diagnose its really a question of finding the hoses and logically walking through them to see where the vacumn is or isn't. As for the 3500 rpm is your timing and carburetor set right? And how do you know this? Did the car work fine around town or have you only been idling? How do you know you have a wide open throttle (WOT) when the accererlator is pressed down?

You might have a vacuum leak somewhere or incorrectly installed hoses. Lack of proper vacuum will make you engine run poorly. You could disconnect the vacuum line to the vacuum tank and plug it. That way, if you engine runs better you can narrow the problem down to the vacuum system. If it still runs badly, there's a problem in the engine itself (and still a problem with the vacuum system ).
