Default bb crank P/N

Hello

My 68 BB got rebuild about 14 Years ago and has since than only done about 15.000 Miles.
The block was bored .030 over and a complete guts kit ( krank, rods, pistons ) got installed from TRW.
Forget 11.5 compression pistons, rods ?? and cast crank.
The kit was purchased without any extra balancing surplus.

I like to get all balanced and since I have to remove all, I like to change the crank against a forged one.

In E-bay, they offer a GM forged, nitrited crank , P/N 3856223, stroke 3.76.
Is this the original 427/435 HP L71/L89/L88 crank ?

They ask 240 $ for a new crank , is that OK.
Is this crank the crossdrilled one ?

What exactly do I need to remove for balancing ? Crank, rods, pistons and ???

I like to rev this engine to 6.500 , will the rods be OK from this kit ?

It was a L71 engine, but the previous owner rebuild the motor due to a twisted crank. He just bought the complete kit and threw all original stuff away, including the rods and pistons.

Thanks. Gunther

Gunther: That part number does not show up in my GM Chev. Corvette Parts Catalog. Group O.646 contains all the Corvette crankshafts.

The 427 crankshafts--depending on which engine--are listed as follows:

3882842, for year 66-69, special H.Perf 427

3882849, for year 1969, except Al. cyl and case special H. Perf

3967811, for years 68-69, with H.D.427

3879621m for 1967, with H.D. 427

Thanks so far.

Brett, why should they be more heavy ? The counterweights should only counterweigh rods n pistons ?
OK, truck pistons are slightly heavier due to the 3rd ring setup, but is this a lot ?

I think the L88 crank has #7113 as a casting number?

Hi again.

So, which still available forged steel hi-perf crossdrilled crankshaft is still available on today's market ?
Who offers something that is Vette specific ?

Thanks. Gunther

It is simple to cross drill any crank if you insist on a cross drilled one but it is not recommended. That said I cross drilled mine believing it would give better oiling.

Hi

OK, any suggestions about a good high torque hi performance steel crank for my 427 CI. Like I mentioned, I like to go to 6500 RPM max.
May be SUMMIT or ???

Hi

OK , here an advertisement :

These are right from GM, these have the GM part #3856223 right on the crank,

And I found this casting 6223 existing in the " How to rebuild BIG-BLOCK CHEVY ENGINES " book from Tom Wilson.
His listing is for 366 , 396 & 427 Engines.

So, it is a GM crank for only 240 US$, but is it useable in a short block Vette engine ?
It is suppost to be nitrided ( normally only done to high performance cranks ), but don't know if it's crossdrilled ?

That # is a 396 crank, it should work for a 427 (I think it's a little lighter than the 427). Maybe someone here can give you more info.

Hi

Yes, I also got a bit more info.
This crank was for example used in a 400 Chevelle 300 HP setup.
Now I know that 300 HP are not 435 HP used on Vettes, but this crank is also nitrited and crossdrilled, so ????

Damn, I don't know anything about cranks !!
