Default hdr to exh pipe connection any diff ideas

any body have any different ideas on how to make a better header collector to exhaust pipe connection?? I hate the 3 bolt flange set up. any body make a slip fit joint like a regular exhaust connection with a u-clamp? any thoughts on that??? (i'll be using a 2 1/2 pipe to a steel hooker type header, small block, maybe a 3" collector,i'd have to measure it to be sure)
thks bob

I made my own system, it's basically a combination between the slip fit and the 3 bolt flange. I modified the exhaust pipes to slip into the header collector and the 3 bolt flange and normal gasket are still there. It makes for a real sturdy mount and I have since never blown a gasket and I regularly scrapte the sopeed bumps with the system (it's on my truck)

I think i see it ...then did you weld the exh pipe 3 bolt flange to the exh pipe to hold it in place? and leave the collector flange free floating? and did you also us a u clamp on the engine side of the connection? thks

yes, that's exactly how I did it. I don't use U clamps, never liked them never will use them. They will crush your pipe and they aren't really good at securing the pipes together. The slip fit into the collector is a pretty tight fit and alonen it will be gas sealed, without the gasket but the gasket is there just in case.

For the rest of the connections I used pipes that slip inside each other and there's a little tab on 2 sides of each pipe, when the pipes slide into each other you can use a little bolt through the tabs tos ecure it. Much easier and neater than clamps.

I never use the u bolt type of clamps either. The ycrush the pipe. I am using the truck style band clamps. These are about 4 inches long and wrap around the pipe and conform to the pipe. Way better than u bolt style clamps. Not as secure as what you are talking about but these work very well on slip fit connections.

No, the tabs are just for the pipe connections further downstram, not for the collector. Kinda hard to explain but race cars commonly use that type of system, my old go kart did too, that's where I got the idea.

The colelctor section was easily made, just slide in the pipe as far as possible, slip over the 3 bolt flange, bolt it down and tack weld it on all 3 sides, take apart and finish the welding, that's all.

twin turbo i'm with you 100% on the collector end....now down stream from there...you assembled the pipes and then welded on the tabs ( already bolted together) to both sides of the joint? I'm guessing home fabricated 16 ga steel L brackets with 1/4 " bolts?

gordonm i used those band clamps in doing my buddies headers and exhaust pipe so i have that in my "bag of tricks" thks
