Default Garage Design (from scratch)

Been interesting weekend... Sold our home/leasing back and will be moving as soon as we build our new home.... With this, I can now design my garage as I want and am trying to think of everything that would be nice to have in the Vette's area.. Here is what I have thought of so far...

* 3rd car bay will be 17' x 25'
* Full insulation and insulated garage doors
* Rear door access to slab behind garage where I will put a storage/shop shed
* window for an AC unit
* slab will have recess for my eagle lift so that I can pull over the unit
* Air and Electric reels in the ceiling

What other items should I consider that would be difficult to add after the garage is built? Not that I can afford everything "I want" but definitely want to think about them before breaking ground.

Take the number of lights you think will be adequate... and then double it. You won't be happy if you can't see to work and tinker around.

i would go with metal haylite fixtures instead of flour. tubes-and a celieng high enough for clearence when cars are on a lift- big enough conduit feed1''to 1-1/4 to accept # 3-#3's for 100 amp(need 60 a for good mig welder) and another for phone, we did my buddys and we did 2x6 walls stuffed with batts cuz he had a furnace and a/c

Friend of mine has a steel girder with a rolling hoist on it. That'll blow the budget for sure! Maybe a drain for easier cleanup. How about the garage doors that hug the ceiling so you can open them w/ a car up on the lift. 220V and wire it for a sound system.

hot and cold water and a laundry sink, 220 volts, i have tv cable and phone also, i fill up two bays with my toys the separate third bay( wall in between) is filled the bikes lawn mowers etc. No cars other then the vette make it into the garage. can you add a fourth bay for the wifes car? i once had to sell one of my toys in a previous house cause the wife didn't like ohio winters and thought two sports car in garage and her minivan outside wasn't right

25 feet is cutting it close, Mine is 30 feet and it gives me room in the front for a nice work bench and room behind for doing things. If the car is say 15 feet long, and that is just a quess, your bench is about 3 feet wide that gives you 8 feet of free space. When pullling an engine and moving a cherry picker that doesn't give alot of front room plus you would have an engine stand.
Anyway mine is 30 feet and I like the extra room.
This is what I eventually added infront of my cars

Don't forget to put lights in the floor so you can see under the car.

Electrical recepticles all around, 220v at both ends for a welder, and a sink so you can wash up. You have to have a stereo and room for a beer 'fridge, too. I'd pass on the engine hoist beam, unless it has a crane trolley too, or you'll have to push the car out from under the dangling motor. Joe

A Big Screen to watch hockey while sweating inside the engine bay!
Plugs every two feet instead of four.
A pulley system overhead to carry the compressor hose wherever you want it.
A video conferencing system directly connected to 100 people on this forum.

Add a recliner chair so you can take a nap/break without having to cleanup to go in the house to take a break.

This sounds just like me! I have a 2 car garage with 2 old cars in there and a LOT of other stuff. I bought this house when I was single and my wife moved in after we got married. She is not happy about unloading the groceries in the rain etc. and when it snows you can guess who has to go out and brush off the mini-van. She IS the major breadwinner these days so that just makes it harder for her to accept.

We bought a vacant lot big enough for a separate shop for my toys. We have plans to build a house with a separate shop for me AMEN! I will be back here asking for garage building advice from you all when we start the project.

-Mark.

go for it...let her and the bikes, lawn mowers,etc... have everything attached to the house and concentrate on your own detached 3 bay shop!!!

If you are in an area where you need heat, it's really tough to beat radiant floor (hot water) heat. It heats very evenly when done correctly and makes working under your cars a lot less painful. Floor drains would be nice, but code won't allow them here in Illinois.

Check out this book:

I'd love to have a fire house like the one guy has... VERY cool setup.

Drive through... Very very deep, about 2 and a half cars wide with benches the whole way down!

Leave at least 12.5' of headroom for a clear floor lift.

Use at least a 6" thick, 3,000# psi concrete pour with wire mesh or rebar reinforcement to hold a two-post lift.

Install a 220 socket on the beam over where the lift will be for the hydraulic pump.

Have the interior walls drywalled and painted white for better interior lighting.

Leave ceiling as open beam for storage or drywall and white paint for better light distribution.

Install a 220 socket for your compressor.

Install pneumatic lines around garage with quick disconnect fittings for air tools.

Install a dedicated 220 volt 20 amp circuit for a welder.

Install lots of 110 sockets around the walls at waist height.

Use at least a 7' door for oversize vehicles.

Include a copper water line through the wall to the ceiling for a fire sprinkler.

Sink (hot and cold water), refrigerator, stereo/TV, and toilet are also nice.
