Default Air Cond. compressor bad

Took my '82 in for air condition service and it turns out the compressor is bad (why of course). I'm wondering should I just replace the compressor and keepmy R12 system or install a new R134 such as the Hot Rod Air Elite with the Sanden compressor or some other vendor.
Any suggestions????

1982 is a decent A/C system. I would just get a new compressor, dryer, and orfice tube and replace them-keep the stock system. If it was my car I'd stay R12 because I have some, but there is nothing wrong with R134 with a fresh system.

Keep the stock system. The Delco R4 compressor is a good unit. You can buy 'em new or rebuilt. In Texas, I decided to stick with R12 -- the car stays cool in 100 degree heat! Your results with R134 may vary, but it primarily comes down to how hot it gets in your area.

If you can get R12 then I would just replace the compressor, the dryer, vacuum it out and charge with r12...better then new. Also dont forget to put in new oil for the compressor.

Cause if you decide to go with R134a then you have to flush out the old mineral oil and that takes some time, and replace o rings and hoses and this is more cost.

Sooner or later someone will post a reply here and tell you to just buy one of those r134a conversion kits from your local auto parts store.
Thinking that these kits are safe is the same as thinking you can drive your Vette with coolant in the oil pan and no harm will ever come of it...

But dont take my opinion..do some reading and decide for yourself..

Like PAGE62 said, you have a good stock A/C system. I would keep it R12 if I could.

Make sure you drive your vette to an A/C shop and have them evacuate the old R12 out of it. then you are good to go with a new compressor, some mineral oil, vacuum & leak check, charge her up.

Thanks for the advice, I followed your suggestion and stayed with the stock system, ordering & installing a new delco compressor and man it's COLD.
thanks
