Default Auto to 5 or 6spd.

Has anyone ever done this conversion? My car is pretty modified, and i'm considering what to do next. My TH400 has leaky seals, and needs bigger stall converter. I also plan on rear gears. I could do all that, or install a 5 or 6dpd manual and get roughly the same performance gain, probably more. If i was to use a 5 or 6spd, what would be the best one to use, that is, would be the easiest to install. Exactly how much of a modification am i talking about? I realize the clutch, etc, but what about the driveshaft, suspension... etc. The car is a 71 L-48. Tks,

Brandon

I'm checking them now. So, theoretically speaking, these transmissions would work...??

What else would i need besides the transmission....

changing for auto to manual is not exactly an easy task, but im sure you can prolly do it. You will need a new console, pedal, flywheel, clutch, and thats the main things i can think of, im sure there is prolly more..but im sure it would probably be worth it. Good luck

Bellhousing, pilot bearing, , TO bearing, fork, linkage assembly, pedal assembly, shifter handle, frame-to-Z-bar bracket (maybe), console top & boot, etc.

Pricewise, I'm not sure a Tremec/Richmond swap is actually a wash. Granted, I know exactly dik about automatics...

My car was originally a BB Auto.

I put a Richmond 6-speed in....the single best upgrade I have done!!
The Richmond will bolt right in place, but like the above posts say you neem some other parts to comlete the conversion

I don't know about the T56's, but it has been discussed so do a search and call Keisler as well!!

Brandon,

We make a complete conversion from automatic to 5-speed overdrive or 6-speed double overdrive, for all Corvette 1963-82. Soon we will be adding '84-96.

Our conversions are based on our custom engineered Tremec TKO and T56 transmissions, complemented with a complete kit of parts - everything from the pedals throught the driveshaft. Your car will look as factory original. We even include the shifter nameplate for the console. The requirements for the console finisher change vary by year, so please CALL US so we may provide you a quote and technical support.

We are a sponsor of Corvette Forum - please see our link at the left side bar of the page.

Shafi,
How is MarK doing?
I was probably the first customer to buy a Richmond 6 off of
you guys.....'99 I believe.

At that time you were just doing Jaguars and Mark sold me the Richmond through Ebay.

Probably the best upgrade that I ever did!!

The hardest part for me in this swap was swapping the pedals. Once that was done the rest was easy.
I really prefer the Tremec TKO 5 speed. It is compact, has internal rail shifter so you are not fiddling with linkage and fits our consels with only a mild cleanup around the shift tower.
I also prefer hydraulic clutches over mechanical and they are easy to bolt in.

Summerfun,

Marc is good - he's back in college finishing up his mechanical engineering degree. I'll tell him you said 'Hi.' Please check out our GM web-site. They (Keisler custom built TKO & T56 transmissions) are big seller for GM.
