I noticed mine is plastic and has some sort of electrical gadget that plugs into two of the terminals on the flasher. I'm not sure what this gadget is, but a) is it needed? and b) will a metal bodied flasher work since this gadget's contacts will touch the body of the flasher?
I have never seen this thing on any other car before.

I believe the gadget you are talking about is a capacitor to flush out radio noise. I replaced my flasher with one of the electronic flasher from Autozone. It is one of the only flashers that I could find on the shelf that was made in the us. The flasher has been working great.

Ya know... i bet thats exactly what its for. I had an old car once that you could hear the turn signals in the radio. Well cool. I think I'll figure out a way to rig up a small piece of electrical tape between the capacitor and the metal body of the flasher to keep things from shorting out or whatever.
