Default 3rd Voltage Regulator gone bad

I'm beginning to suspect something could be causing the voltage regulators to go out on my car. Today the 3rd regulator I've had in there in 4 years stopped working correctly and now the guage reads in the red on the high side... again.

So is it the fact that I'm buying regulators at AutoZone, or is there a better answer? I think I'll go to NAPA for my next one.

*edit* Car is completely stock, no electric fans or stereo amplifiers. I do have a newer Pioneer cd player installed, but problem started happening when I still had the factory 8-track in there.

maybe the battery is starting to go and causing a significant load on the system? Just a thought. Try a specific gravity test on each battery cell maybe?

My battery is brand new, but it is a Wal-Mart special. I've seen many brand new batteries go bad within one or two days of use, so I think I'll run a discharge test on it and test the cells individually.

My last battery was a Wal-Mart $29.95 special, but it lasted 5 years.

It certainly can't hurt to test it, but I have had very good luck with wallyworld batteries. Got them in my boat, Suburban, and the wife's beater Neon, and my Vette. 95% of all batteries in this country are probably all made by the same people anyway (Globe-Union). Hopefully someone here will have other ideas, battery was just the first thing that came to mind for me.

Did you have the alternator checked/replaced when you did the regulator. A bad diode will cuase regulators to burn up.
Also by gauge in the red, I assume you mean a voltmeter not the ammeter.
