Default 20 inch??

Hey all,

Just a small question as to whether anyone is rolling on 20s here, and if you CAN on a c3 Vette without too many problems. Ive found some really beauty Chip Foose wheels and am wondering if theyll work? 20x8.5 5x4.75 with apparentally 0 offest and 0 backspacing??? What works with these big rims on Vettes?

That would weird with the tires sticking out about 3 inches... Stock backspacing is 4 inches.. therefore - zero inches backspacing will stick 3 - 4 inches out...

You are a little confused about back spacing and wheel offset. Try this web site for an education.

I've always been confused about offset... why is an 8" wide wheel with 4" backspacing not zero offset?? If it has to do with the width of the flange (which must vary between designs), how can this chart be universal? Hopefully with somebody's help I can finally figure that out.

20s are too much wheel by most people's tastes, but more importantly you're not helping performance any. Less sidewall brings diminishing returns beyond 17 or 18" and most of all, that much wheel is a ton of unsprung weight. That kills ride quality and performance.

Someone had a really good link about that within the past week.
The moral of it all goes something like this....

1)Wheel width does NOT include the rim edge of the wheel, just the mounting surface
2)Back spacing does include this extra edge, which ads some distance and varies a lot pending on the product.

3)The black figures in above chart are the offset. +ve being towards the inside of the center line of the wheel in mm and -ve being towards the outside of the centerline of the wheel in mm.

4)Back spacing is measured as the
a)width of the wheel devided by two.
b)add the +ve or -ve offset ( where postive will give you a bigger number and more back spacing as it moves the wheel further out from the hub)
c)add the rim edge factor of the wheel that differs from make to make

.....and that is how I understand it after I read all that stuff last week

HAh,

Ive been a bit surprised to see all the responses to this. Actually the thing with 0 backspacing musta just been a typo on the website, even I knew that much. In any event Im also aware of the greater rotating mass and enertial requirements at turning 20inch wheels. I had Lexani 20's on my truck, loved em, just based PURELY on aesthetics. After finally getting a photoshop done of an 81 with 20's, I think it IS a bit too much. 18's will be perfect for what Im going for. Thanks though guys, you were helpful and pleasently opinionated as usual.

Hi there!

I've had my 20" for couple of years now and I can assure you can put them under your car and have no worries at all. I opted the classic TTII from American Racing. Went with 8" wide wheels in front (4" BS) and 10" (5.5" BS) at the back. You can use the 8.5" all around if you'd like no worries. You just need to learn more about the spoke design and then choose the right offset. Do have a link to the wheels you are looking at?

Well...hahaha...I keep getting pulled into the darkside here with 20s.

I have a design I wouldnt mind, but since this is a strictly performance based descision as opposed to an aesthetic one, I think my second thought (nice eh?) is a good one, and Ill just go with 18's on the corners.

Ill send the link here for you guys of the 20 and the 18...now bear in mind Im a fan of...less CLASSICAL designs in my wheels. If youve ever seen my Lexani's youd know that.

18 Inch Wheel

20 Inch Wheels

Feel free to browse the wheels on this site and make suggestions, Im debating between a few at this time.

20's are too big and the design you chose would be better on a truck.

see...hahaha much better

Im still thinking in terms of truck rims, but I cant STAND stock style or clasic style rims on ANY car or truck. I like the design of the 18s a lot more. Ah well....

See, all of those look amazing hahaha. I LOVE how they totally defy the conventions of Corvettes, and yet makes them look good. Anyhow, Im still pondering whether to go with the 18s or the 20s...either way theyll look beauty.
