Default Do I need headers for HP with ported heads?

I was thinking of doing some nice basic head work to my LS-5. I have alot of underhood heat and I am not sure about going with headers.

Anyone have any advice? If so what are good headers for torque? A Tri-y design seems to be the best in my opinion. Anyone have any experience with headers by ed? By the way my mechanic will no doubt be fitting a new ex manifold to my car in a few days. I need to make a decision...

youll be kicking yourself if you dont go with headers, and it WONT raise underhood temeratures that drastically, and if it does, invest in some electric fans. You start making HP gains, youre going to definitely want to keep things cool....butg for now youll be fine with headers 1 5/8s sounds right for you....long headers into a true duel. That'll run you about 250 for the true dual and about 400 for the headers, a worthwhile investment considering youll unleash a good 40 horses or so.

Street ported heads are always a good idea. However, to get all the benefits from them, headers are a must. As far as heat goes, Jet Hot offeres coatings that substantially reduce radiated heat. Jegs and Summit sell wraps to cut down on underhood heat.

Hope this helps.

I agree to go with the headers, however for a 454 I would go with the 1.75 inch primaries.

Why go thru the trouble of porting your heads if you aren't going to get headers?

For strictly street use, tri-y headers are the best. Someone sent me this e-mail, they were pleased with them. I am going to put a set on my 350 this winter.

Joe

I got them from Stan's Headers in Auburn, WA (suburb of Seattle).

Here are some pictures from their site. http://www.stans-headers.com/photos.htm
The installed view is a Big Block Chevy, but the installation looks just like mine. The 109Y is the header I have. Don't know the exact size of the tubes, but it's something like 1-5/8 inch going into 2 inch going into the collector. The outlet is a really slick sort of ball-and socket joint held together by flanges. This allows for some misalignment. The piece they do not show is the part that attaches to the exhaust pipe. It is the female portion of the ball and socket joint with whatever size exhaust you need - either 2 or 2-1/2 inch. That will need to be welded to the exhaust pipe. I suspect they will line up fine with the exhaust pipes, although I'm not 100% sure because I didn't want to cut mine up and made a separate adapter pipe from the header back to the exhaust pipe splice at the crossmember.
