I am chasing a small miss in my 78 L48 and want to see if I can isolate it to one plug/cylinder. What trick do you use to remove the plug wire from the distributor while the engine is running and not get shocked?
If you get shocked, you probably have faulty plug wires, with bad insulation. If it really scares you to try it, you can go to any auto parts house and pick up a plug wire remover....
Several tool companies sell insulated pliers for just that task. I have good luck removing the wires at the distributor cap bare handed, although they can still pop you. Makes you jump on occassion, but shouldn't do any harm.
The First thing I'd do is look under the hood when it's dark....you'll see the spark if it's a wire..... a spray bottle with water will also help.
This Ignition tester from snap-on cost me $250.00 It reads Kv on each cylinder & finds bad/fouled spark plugs also!!

You can also try to hook up a timing light to each wire and see when it flashes, the cyl that is bad should light at the same time as the miss occurs. If you have an adj light make sure you set it to 0.

On an inductive timing light pick up the light flashes due to current flow. With a bad wire the light won't flash at all, of course it depends on how bad the wire is. Broken or just passing a week current. Lilse makes a tester that will indicate a missing or weak firing cylinder similar to an inductive pick up.

I've had great luck with the spray bottle of water. if th problem is insulation in the distributor or the wires, it'll light up like a Christmas tree when you spray it. A little shade or darkness helps isolate the problem.
