Default Need cam -Stroker motor

Next summer I'm going to build a budget stroker short block. I was planning on a 383 but might go with a 3.875" stroke and built a 396ci instead. I'm only going to have about $2,000-$2,500 to spend on the new motor so I'm gonna have use my current top end. I need suggestions on what type of cam I should get. I want to make as much power as I can; the car is a street car but will go to the track from time to time.

Here is my setup:

10:1 compression
Sportsman II heads
Edelbrock RPM intake
750 Speed Demon

The car is a 4 speed with 3.73 gears.

Spend the littel bit extra and get a roller cam. It will behave better on the street, have more vaccum, and you don't have to break it in.

That's what I did.

YOu want a roller cam for the street for a 383ci then a CC XR274R would be my recommnendation. YOu would nedd to port the heads to get the full benefit of this cam. Tire shredding power and you will think it's a mild mannered reporter until you hit the happy pedal.

If no roller then XE 274 or the next one up would be nice.

Motorhead:

I was thinking about port and polishing my heads myself with a kit from summit. Is that XR274R a solid Roller cam?

I think the specs are something like: @.050" 236/242 .560/.570 110 LSA

What kind of horsepower do you think I would get out of my combo with this cam?

You can get books on DIY head porting or look on the internet. Here is link for basic head porting that you can do and not mess up your heads without a flow bench, http://www.sa-motorsports.com/diyport.shtm

The XR274R is solid roller I would not go any bigger and this cam is really pushing it with Sportsman II heads, a big solid roller really needs big heads as you can get lifts into the 0.600 in. range. Check the max lift on the heads first you might be better off with a flat tappet cam.

Horse power in your case is limited by the heads but you should be able to get ~ 450 HP

I posted in your other thread and I noticed when I ran your cam choices through Desktop Dyno that all those cams would get close to 40 HP more if you'd go with 215cc heads instead of 200cc heads...

thanks for the help guys

I think I might port and polish my sportsman II heads and then I could always upgrade to better heads later on.
As for the cam, I just checked the info. on my valve spring and they are rated at .560" max lift. So I guess the XR274R is too big unless I change to stronger springs.

There is always a max lift on the heads to so check with World as to what that max is.

You always have to match cam with springs, most big solid rollers are going to use double springs, There is always a max lift on the heads and also a max diameter for springs. Now these can usally be changed by a machine shop to bigger but check with World as to what that max is.

I brought the heads from Jegs last year so I just checked their catalog. It says the follows:

1.250" single springs, 100#@ seat, .560" max lift.

is that .560 the max lift of the springs or of the actual heads themselves?

should be springs, but probably real close on the heads also, single springs and only 100 lbs on the seat is a little on the weak side for to much RPM
