I'm removing the elect fuel pump and replacing with a mech. fuel pump. Can I replace the push rod thru the opening or do I have to remove the intake (to replace the cam to mech.pump- push rod) ???? Thxxxxxx
It's a piece of cake, but there's a trick to holding the rod in place while you mount the pump. It involves using a longer bolt somewhere... anyone remember what that is all about?
Yes, there is a hole that the longer bolt goes in, but you can also use grease to hold the rod in place while you install the pump. Not hard to do at all.
There is a bolt on the block to remove, and replace temporarily with a longer bolt that you tighten (very lightly) against the fuel pump push rod. Very easy to find, just look at the front of the block for a bolt covering this access hole to the push rod. The bolt seems to have no other purpose but to cover the hole.
Have also read to grease up the push rod and place it in the freezer overnight; then it will stay put in the block during fuel pump assembly. But don't know why anyone would bother, since use temporarily of a long bolt in the access hole is very easy.
Just did mine...get the engine as close to TDC ( this will give you more room for the rod to go in the engine), you dont have to take out the bolt, I used a hack saw blade. You just put it in so the blade is in-between the rod and cover, then just slip the pump in front of the blade (it acts like a shoe horn), then just pull the blade out.
If I understand it right, you have no pushrod in the engine now, right? If thats the case, the only thing stopping you from putting it in from the bottom is clearance to the frame. I'm guessing you had a block-off plate on the engine, so once thats off, just slide it in with real heavy grease. If you use the bolt, don't forget to remove it! you probably already have a short one in there to plug the hole.
