Default Backfire - ouch!

Ok, got my headers, and sidepipes put on - finally. After alternator bracket issues, the need for a longer belt, pipe brackets not lining up correctly etc., I try to start the car.

I haven't driven her in 2 weeks, and she was a little sluggish firing up, but when she turned over - sidepipes sounding absolutely fantastic, I get two of the loudest backfires you have ever heard, not deep, but ear piercing loud - loud enough that my neighbors came out to make certain I was ok.. hahahah.

Could I have flooded the car and caused this, or could I have screwed something else up during my install? Either way, the 5 seconds of rumble was fantastic - this weekend is going to be good - look out Richmond!!!

you definitely have less back pressure then before...lets think about this for a moment..... you probably have a cam overlap when both valves are open momentarily.... could the loss of back pressure cause fresh intake gases to get sucked into the exhaust system and go boom???? i guess the exiting exhaust gas could cause a vacuum of sorts and suck the unburned gases into the exhaust pipe where they would mix with hotter gases and go boom. any one want to chime in and confirm /or reject my hypothesis???

I bought the pipes from a fellow forum member used, and they came with the original hooker muffs, but being a muscle car freak, they were taken out immediately - My old pipes were extremely loud as well. I imagine WOT will show me the most diff.

I will check the plugs - might be the issue - not sure.

However, the next firing will take place outside the garage, my ears still hurt.

Does anyone watch MXC(most extreme challenge) with all the oriental folks competing in ridiculous events - I can't stop laughing it is hilarious - my girl doesn't appreciate this humor as much as I - glad Mondays are my nights.

Wouldn't that cause a "Boom" every time on every cylinder & the only fix would be more backpressure or longer tube headers???

good point on the first part??? maybe its cumulative somehow or perhaps the flow is better on a couple of cylinders??? as for the second part maybe a leaner mixture would also fix it? don't know just thinking outloud...

You want em - you got em. Where are you located?

I do think my mixture is a little rich, any idea on leaning things up a bit? I also may have flooded it a bit - tomorrow night will be the big test.

It could definately be crossed wires - I am far from the perfect mechanic. Generally most of my work goes as follows.

Purchase new parts and begin dissasembly.
Begin assembly
Find problem
purchase more parts to fix problem caused by previous owner
begin assembly
find another issue which needs to be addressed
buy 12 pack
start assembly again
realize I need something I don't have
go to parts store again - now filthy
continue install
5 hours into the install I 1/2 way throughthe 12er, music is now blaring out of the garage, and I am now furious, and on the forum asking for help.
Install is finally finished 9thanks to the forum) and I am staring at the car wondering what my next project will be, and then reale that my simply leaf spring install resulted in shocks, bushings, swaybar, sanding and stripping the tirecarrier, and a potential hangover.

Sounds like a crossed wire problem or fouled plugs lately firing one . I'd check both . 18436572

i'm with you on that one, and i do think we all benefit from a collaborative environment and shared experiences/different perspectives on any issue gives a better solution. i know i will never bash anyones elses thoughts, but rather share my own... and hopefully learn from others.

I wanted to take a second to thank you guys for your help, ideas, thoughts about BOOM BOOM issue. My ears have healed, since last night, and my hookers rumble/roar now with no backfire!!!

The problem - I crossed 2 plugs - #2 and whatever the next was...
My stupidity - but it would have taken forever without you guys....

Thanks again!!
