Default Upper Radiator Hose Selection? - Please Help!!

Hello,
Everyone helped me out with my radiator question and I was wondering if you could pass on some more helpful advice. In the post, Tom mentioned that there are two radiators for 1968 corvettes. The radiator I have in there now is 60022, which is very close to Tom’s A70A (the second picture on page 2), so I know that I have to remove my expansion tank.

My question is that right now I have a flex hose, which I think may be causing air bubbles, I want to replace it with the stock hose, but I am not sure which hose is correct. Is it possible for you to look at these hoses and let me know which one would fit properly?

Hose examples:
Dewitts Radiators Hoses
Dr. Rebuild’s website hose chart (pdf file) (One of my co-workers, who is a corvette genius, suggests Hose C)
The one I think is going to fit

I sincerely thank you for all of your wonderful help.

Thanks,
Joe

Also, does anyone know a local (Massachusetts) Auto parts store that would carry these hoses? Especially, if I am not positive about fitting, it would make buying and returning (if necessary) easier.

Thanks,
Joe

Hey Joe - where abouts in MA are you ?

I use Robbins auto parts for parts that I need to be good.
They carry quality brands, etc. Robbins is in So NH.

NAPA should be able to set you up with the right hose.

In the Burlington area - Burlington Auto parts or Bedford Auto parts (same Co).

I would consider one of the stainless steel ones, but these
are also corrugated like a flex hose ... so maybe not for you.

I have lot's of air in my '68 427 with DeWitt radiator and flex hose. Doesn't seem to hurt anything. It'll run hours without breaking 190. I don't think air is your problem.

This is my TEMPORARY setup (somewhat obviously, since there's no CAR there...). The hoses are being replaced by stainless lines once I drop the engine into the car.

Chris,

Thanks for the reply!

I am not sure the exact problem but I want to eliminate all possibilities.
As for your engine, it looks sweet, but I have a question.
Have you tested it in the car?
When I had mine out on the dyno, it ran real cool, but once I stuffed it into the vette, the small engine compartment along with the lack of air flow caused it to run at 210. The heat has no where to go.
With the hood open, it is okay, but if it idles on a hot day, the temp climbs fast.
You are probably right though, it may be other things. the cooling systems are tough on these things/

Sweet car!!

Thanks again,
Joe

Dave,

Thank you for the reply.

I am in mid-west mass area around Framingham.
I talked to a napa parts store and they said they can get me the hose.
I am going to stop by today and order it. It should be in tomorrow. If not I am going to try Burlington Auto parts and eventually Robbins.

As for the stainless hoses, they are nice, but expensive and I would like to know that it is going to work before I install them. I am sure I will put them on eventually.

Thanks agian,
Joe

P.S. I will PM you if I have to go to one of those stores.

Nope. Never been in the car. Ever. Of course, you're right, but I suspect that the heat under the hood is pretty small compared to the heat generated by 400 HP in the combustion chambers. The radiator should be able to scrub off the vast majority of it before it ever gets to be radiant.

How hot do your exhaust manifolds (or headers) get? Mine are hovering about 250-300 (exterior) with no air blowing across them.

Personally, I feel the main problem with your overheating is in airflow. I suspect a better fan solution or shrouding attention will pay dividends. Just my $0.02.

Regardless, good luck! I'm crossing my fingers that I won't have issues once I finally get mine buttoned up.

Side track question:
Chris could you post some pictures of your engine break in stand? It looks like a nice way to break in a cam and check for leaks.
Thanks,
Gary

Joe,

I'm sure the NAPA store will set you up fine.
No problem .. PM me for directions ... or I can pick something up for
you at Robbins ... meet me in Burlington (work).

The blue silicone hoses are nice, but selection may be limitted.

Dave,
I ordered the hose from Napa.
They will have it for me today and I will pick it up after work.
I am not sure if it is going to fit so don't forget m ,I may need you to get me the part at Robbins.
I use to work in Burlington also, where in Burlington? I was on second ave. There is also another member, who works at Oracle in Burlington. I think his name is Jack. He helped me before.
I'll let you know how the hose goes.

Thanks for your help,
Joe

I have one of those and would not recommend it. Too many points of failure. Mine has rubber ends with an aluminum cover and 4 clamps. It poped off the radiator on the highway this summer and dumped all my coolant. I am going to put on a conventional hose. I think it will seat better on the pipes and be less affected by vibration.

Nope, that's not it. I just add the correct hose to the website. It's part #533 GM #3917670
