Finally had it with my carter quadrajet, been rebuilt once and still sux. Was thinking about an edelbrock performer #1406. Anybody use one, are they any good? Holleys and edelbrocks Q-jet seem a little pricey. Regular rebuilt Rochester and the Edelbrock performer are in the same price range. Running an edelbrock performer alum intake, crane 350/350 LT1 cam and MSD. Suggestions appreciated.

Quadrajets are good carbs, but are often misunderstood. Why not contact Lars for a loaner (if his program still exists) Maybe he will rebuild and tune it for you.
i have a q-jet that i'm putting back on my edelbrook performer 2101 intake. i was gonna buy a new carb.... a cleaner looking one..... any ideas on how to clean up a carb..... degreaser?
If my memory serves me right, the 1406 Edelbrock is a 600cfm carb. This carb sits atop my 2101 manifold. ( I gave away my quadrajet, wish I hadnt) It is a reliable carb. How is your engine running with the LT-1 cam? Does your engine have solid lifters?

glad to see your getting into the hobby, just remember safety first and alot of the solvents are known to cause cancer so be carefull wear gloves and enjoy the hobby, i started the same way you are...when i was about 14
my dad had a 74 in the family for 16 years...... i bought my 77 last year april....... so far.........it's been a learning experience and a money pit.... that's the effect of having a vette
I've had one on my 68 for a few years now and I like it. Easy to tune / adjust, no gaskets to leak. Works great and still looks good. I also have one on a chevy 4x4 full size that was my daily driver for about 4 years - no problems winter or summer but the plating on the carb body is tarnished now. If you plan to race you may want to consider a Holley or Demon carb. They use center hung floats that prevent fuel starvation on hard cornering. Also, parts for Holley style carbs are available almost anywhere, not so for Edelbrocks. May or may not be important to you, but something to consider.
The LT1 cam seems OK but with carb issues it's hard to get everything set up right. As for racing, no I wont be racing, just happy enough to get some Weekend cruising in. Hydraulic lifters, not solid. Also I see some Edelbrock 1406's on ebay for 200 NIB, as always price is a consideration. If most guys are happy with theirs then thats probably the way I'm going to go.
Carter carbs are one of the best performing carbs there is . Holley and Elderbrock are great carbs as well . The quadrajet is not meant to be a performance carb but is great on stockish motors . I have run Elderbrock carbs on all my street machines for the last 10-12 years and have been totaly satisfied . Keep in mind that there are a lot of people out there that can replace parts in a carb but finding someone who knows how to test function , flow, and make one work correctly is a whole different story . I personaly like Carter carbs , I would just find me someone who knew how to repair it correctly .
Isn't the Edelbrock Performer just a re-manufactured version of the Carter AFB??? I have the Carter and have been thinking of changing to something more performance orientated. Maybe I should just rebuild it.
Yep, but the edelbrocks are shiney! The location of the fuel inlet is also changed. Rebuild it as long as the butterfly shaft bores are not worn.
