pulled the diff from the '81 the other day and got some pics developed. the failure was the pinion gear sheared off the pinion shaft. the case has several chunks popped out from where the pinion gear was jammed into it by the ring gear.
from a couple others i've spoken to, this damage is likely the result of the ring and pinion lash not being set correctly. stupid me, i took it out 4 years ago and let a company locally that "specializes" in this stuff do it because i didn't feel i had the tools or experience to set it up like it needs to be.
vegas for you.
it is possible that this is just the result of age or possibly even a microscopic crack at the time of manufacture but i think the likelyhood is that the knuckle-dragging wrench monkeys here locally screwed the pooch.
such is life. and i wasn't even racing when this happened. go figure.
Nasty.... My dad sheared a tooth of of the 78's pinion and it jammed inbetween th cover and the ring gear. It popped a very nice hole in the cover and chewed up the ring gear bolts pretty good. I still haven't gotten that diff magnfluxed for cracks.
