I have a 71 that was originally equipped with a small block and muncie 4 speed. My question is this, are there different bellhousings for 11 inch and 10.5 inch clutches? If so how do I know which one I have. The bellhousing is original equipment.
Yes, there are different bellhousings. It's most likely that your car came with an 11" clutch. Post the casting number off the bellhousing and we can tell you which size clutch it is for.
I would be suprised if it cleared at 11 inch clutch. I went to the wreckers with a flywheel for the 11 inch clutch and the flywheel was 14 inches in diameter.
A camaro bellhousing would not work. Guessing I would think 10.5 but don't really know.
I do know my 11 inch required a 14 inch flywheel. While the clutch would fit a smaller flywheel the pressure plate would not.
The "444" bellhousing is for an 11" clutch and the 14" 168 tooth flywheel. The "444" interchanges with the "621" or the "697" bellhousing. These are common on big blocks and many 350's but there are some notable exceptions.
The "403" bellhousing for the 10.5" clutch interchanges with the "383" bellhousing. These bellhousings use the 153 tooth 12-3/4" flywheel, 10.5" clutch and smaller starter nose/brace. Mostly found on 327's or a few 350's but again there are a few notable exceptions.
The whole package must match. Starter, flywheel, clutch and brace. No mix and match possible. The only possible mix is if you have the big flywheel that is drilled for the smaller clutch. Then you can use the big bellhousing, big starter, big brace, and smaller 10.5" clutch but that would be rather unusual.
